We plan to expand our music program in the future to include music theory classes, music appreciation, and even online piano lessons! For 2013-2014 we are offering a class on Byzantine Chant.
Introduction to Byzantine Chant
Introduction to Byzantine Chant gives students a foundation in the basic theory and practice of byzantine chant. Students will study fundamentals of the eight tones used in many Eastern Orthodox churches. Instruction will include plenty of hands on practice. The foundation of instruction will be a series of charts that make the tones approachable and intuitive for various learning styles. We will also study liturgical terminology, service structure, and byzantine notation.
Previous musical experience is helpful, but not necessary. Chant is especially appropriate for those who like to learn music by ear. Introduction to Byzantine Chant is open to students 12 years old and above or by permission of the instructor. Students will be required to sing alone during class. Registration will be limited to 12 students in each class. Students will need to purchase or have access to a copy of the Kazan Vespers music book published by the Antiochian Archdiocese.
